New 2D survival platformer Residual has had a release date and trailer unveiled at GameSpot’s Play for All showcase. The fresh take on platformers is a project involving famous publisher Apogee Entertainment. Apogee Entertainment have a rich history, with notable titles including Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein.
Produced by Orange Pixel, Residual comes with an interesting blend of features for a platformer. Landing in an auto generated world, you are challenged to explore a unique alien world. After crashing in a spaceship, you must gather resources to stay alive whilst delving deep below the surface to discover the world’s secrets.
The trailer is rich with gameplay, displaying the versatility in world generation. Furthermore, you can clearly see the role exploration will play in the game. Collecting items such as memory cards can unlock more of the game.
Orange Pixel have further underlined the importance of exploration in the game. Finding the various drops give more information on the long forgotten galaxy and help to delve into the secrets of each world.
Moreover, the player has the option of three different gender options; male, female or non-binary. Alongside the main player is a fun helper bot. The bot, known as Personal Disaster Bot, seems to play the comedic relief role whilst also offering insightful information about the alien terrain.
A notable feature of the game is its original Nature Engine. Unique to Residual, the engine includes over 3,000 species of life. A key part to survival for the player is to ensure a good source of food and warmth. Overall, Residual offers an array of challenges for the player in a refreshing package for the genre.
Residual is set for release in Q3 2021, with no exact date at this time. This will be the first release by the studio since the relaunch of Apogee Entertainment. In addition, it will be available for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
