The news was revealed on the last Nintendo Direct, though it didn’t have the excitement factor of some other additions; the two new characters preparing for battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are Pyra and Mythra.
If you don’t know them, don’t feel too embarrassed. I don’t either. But they’re from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and will be counting as one additional character. This means they will fight alongside Season 2’s other inclusions: Steve/Alex from Minecraft, Min Min from Arms, and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy.
The director of the game, Masahiro Sakurai, hosted a showcase to explain the reasoning behind the characters.
Attack on Titans
He showed a new stage, the Cloud Seas of Alrest, that is set on the back of Azurda. As the stage floats, other Titans will be visible in the background. Also, while they occupy one character slot, players can switch between Pyra and Mythra at any time during a battle.
“Pyra specializes in power, while Mythra excels in speed,” he explains. “By changing between the two fighters, players can juggle attacking with powerful abilities using Pyra and swiftly leaping around the battlefield with Mythra.”
The best part about the showcase is that Nintendo decided to hold it one the release date of the characters (March 4th, 2021). That’s right! Pyra and Mythra are available to download as of now alongside a patch (Version 11.0.0). New spirits from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will also arrive, so fans of the series should have plenty to play for.
If you don’t have the Fighters Pass for Season 2, it will set you back $5.99, or $29.99 for the Fighters Pass if you decide you would like to add more than just the newest character.
