While it never really left, Japanese science fiction (mainly mecha) has seen a return to form after disappearing. In the late 90’s, I can remember games like MechWarrior (while not Japanese, certainly in a similar category) being popular.
MechWarrior was more of a Western attempt at fighting in mechanized suits– slow and cumbersome. With the release of Daemon X Machina, it seems there is still a market for the over-the-top, fast-paced anime action of series like Gundam.
Developed by Bandai Namco, SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays is only available on PC in the West. In Asia, it is also on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. While this may seem odd, its actually the first time in the West for the game, so it could be released on other platforms at a later date.
The game is an amalgamation of characters and mobile suits from multiple Gundam series. These include Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, and Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans. Not enough there for you? Well, there’s more.
Bandai Namco has shown off the 4th DLC for SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays, entitled Dispatch Mission Set 4. It can bought for $7.99 by itself, or for $24.99 for the Season Pass (where it will be included), and will be available March 12th, 2020. Here is a list of what you can expect from the latest DLC:
- “Kio’s Decision: Together with the Gundam”– Kio Asuno character, Gundam AGE-3 Normal, Gundam AGE-FX, Aurora and Ki0
- The New School of Master Asia Aura of Royalty– Allenby Beardsley, Domon Kasshu, Master Asia characters, Burning Gundam, Master Gundam, Nobel Gundam, and “Gekitou no Naka Sorezore no Yakusoku,” and “Trust You Forever.”
- Rising on Earth– Mask, Raraiya Akupari characters, G-Lucifer, G-Self Perfect Pack, Kabakali, “Futari no Mahou,” “G no Senkou,” and “Idainaru Kyoi”
- “With you, if it’s with you”– Carris Nautilus, Garrod Ran characters, Gundam Nouvelle, and Gundam X Unit 3
And this is the 4th DLC! So if you have a mecha-sized itch that needs scratching, the Season Pass is probably the best deal. If you still aren’t sure or need to see it in action, you can check out the trailer below.
