Microsoft is granting gamers the ability to refund their games and applications without the need of support.
One of the features missing from the Windows/Xbox Store is the capacity to request a refund for a game after purchasing it. A post found through the Xbox Insider program has confirmed that Microsoft is planning to introduce a self-refund feature in the coming months. Other platforms, such as Valve’s Steam client have already implemented this practice, which thousands of gamers taking advantage of the program after the release of No Man’s Sky.
“You’ve spoken; we’ve listened. In support of offering gamers the freedom of choice, we’re making changes to the Microsoft Store purchase experience by offering customers a simple way to instantly return digital products like games and apps through account.microsoft.com,” Microsoft says. “When a game or app leaves you wanting more, we’re here to help. Self-service refunds on Xbox One and Windows 10 provide a quick, simple way of returning a digital product.”
According to Microsoft, these refunds can be done without the need of customer support, hence the name “Self-service refunds”. Most games and applications purchased through the Windows Store or the Xbox Live Marketplace can be reimbursed within 14 days of purchase, as long as you follow a set of specific rules.
First, all downloadable content, season passes, and additional add-ons to games are not eligible for receiving refunds. Gamers are reminded to try the game out first before purchasing additional content, a problem that may arise with “Deluxe” or “Collector” edition packages.
Second, items must have less than 2 hours of gameplay spread across all accounts, and you must wait at least one day after release to request a refund. No doubt this is to stop gamers from applying for a refund after finishing the game they played. Lastly, Microsoft warns that some Windows 10 applications will not be eligible for refunds and that they reserve the right to remove this feature for people who abuse the program.
