October-time has come again and I’m looking forward to one of the best nights of the year, Halloween! Yes, Pumpkin Spice Lattes and AAA games are everywhere, but don’t forget to get into the Halloween spirit with some quality horror titles. Here are six games we have hand-picked to get you into the Halloween mood.
Call Of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game – Cyanide Studios
Firstly I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Call Of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game. Call Of Cthulhu is an upcoming survival horror game based in a Lovecraftian world filled with monsters, mysteries and cults. The gameplay is focused around using your detective skills to uncover mysteries and events of the past to move the story forward. The addition of a sanity mechanic which can affect the outcome of the story makes me even more intrigued. Call Of Cthulhu is released on October 30th, Halloween night, for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Friday The 13th: The Game – IllFonic
For a game with a bit more lighthearted fun, try IllFonic’s Friday The 13th: The Game. Its an enjoyable multiplayer survival game where seven players have to survive the night as well-known Camp Crystal Lake Counselors and one lucky player gets to control the infamous Jason Voorhees. With some genuinely exciting gameplay and guaranteed hilarious moments it’s a must have for some friendly online play. Friday The 13th: The Game is also free this month on Playstation Plus so there’s no reason why you Playstation 4 owners shouldn’t give it a try.
Resident Evil 2 – Capcom
If you’re in the mood for some old-school survival horror, there has never been a better time to revisit Resident evil 2. A remake version of this classic is being released on next-gen consoles early 2019 so this is arguably the perfect time to experience the original. The staple Resident Evil tank controls and fixed camera angles mixed with zombies and all manner of other monsters provide a horror experience that is still just as effective today as it was when it first hit our TV screens in 1998.
Luigi’s Mansion 3DS – Nintendo
For players both young and old this Halloween we have Luigi’s Mansion on the 3DS. This is a port of the original Gamecube gem with some updates. Older Nintendo fans will remember getting rid of pesky ghosts with the Poltergust 3000; a vacuum device used to suck up spirits. Luigi’s Mansion such a good experience to pass on to the younger generation of Nintendo fans with Luigi’s comical reactions and fun gameplay mixed with the spooky setting of a haunted mansion. Luigi’s Mansion will be released on October 12th in North America and October 19th in Europe for the 3DS.
Bloodborne – From Software
You may want to clear out your schedule for the whole month for this one. Bloodborne is an incredible variation of the Dark Souls experience which favours fast-flowing combat to the strategy orientated mechanics of its predecessors. You’ll find yourself rolling more than Link in Hyrule Field and screaming in panic as an unspeakable horror ever-so-slightly misses you again and again on your last shred of health. Like all souls games, Bloodborne rewards exploration and the conviction of retrying an area or boss countless times until you get it right. With incredible scenes, unbelievable monsters and fluid gameplay Bloodborne is an absolute must-have for any PS4 owner.
Outlast Trinity – Red Barrels
Outlast Trinity is the last addition to this list and is a collection that includes Outlast, its Whistleblower DLC and Outlast 2. Outlast is one of my favourite examples of next-gen horror done right. Both games focus on a stealthy/ run and hide experience with absolutely no way to fight against what’s hunting you. This panic is only increased through the use of a night vision camcorder which requires batteries to use, run out of batteries and you’re going to get lost in the dark with all manner of threats. Outlast is a series which pulls no punches in terms of gore and moments so extreme which will leave you equally shocked and scared time and time again.
