Sony has been pretty busy behind the scenes lately. While most people are focused on the PlayStation 5 (or just acquiring one) or games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sony has made a few interesting moves.
It seems Sony envisions the PlayStation as a one-stop gaming hub. They are already looking into crowd-sourcing gaming data in order to help guide players who may need it; possibly the next step in walk-throughs.
But Sony also just hinted at the entirety of their plan having more nuance. The patent looks into setting a metric, and “watching” the player’s progress to determine if and when they need help (and then how much of it to give).
The patent would help players through difficult sections of the game with hints culled from the vast data collected. Better yet, it could make those elusive Platinum Trophies into something attainable. If you’re into that kind of thing.
In an example, a player is stuck on a puzzle. The system would notice this, and maybe send a message to help. Then it could draw attention to a specific piece of that puzzle. If it all comes to naught, it will finally give the solution.
As a means of keeping the player entrenched in the game world, it makes sense. Who wants to keep looking up solutions? But whether players will enjoy the intrusiveness is another question to consider (though I’m sure there’d be an option to opt out).
It’s all part of the gaming industry’s shift toward accessibility. They want to allow as many people as possible to play their games. It’s a noble goal to chase, as long as it doesn’t take away from the gaming experience as a whole.
There is no word on when this will happen, or even if it will happen. Much like the possible Sunset Overdrive sequel, just because Sony patented/trademarked it doesn’t mean it will be used. Sources for this piece are Gamerant and mysmartprice.
