Fortnite released for the Nintendo Switch during this year’s E3, but its release was followed by controversy, as Playstation 4 users found out that their profile was not usable on the Nintendo Switch version of the game.
As it stands, Microsoft and Nintendo have been working together with cross-platform titles, with games like Rocket League, Minecraft, Paladins, and now, Fortnite playable with each other on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Sure, Playstation 4 gamers can enjoy the cross-platform experience with PC, Mac, and mobile devices, but this excludes the rest of the console market. No doubt, Sony has heard the fans’ outcry, with the CEO making an official statement regarding the situation.
“We’re hearing it,” said President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden. “We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
When Fortnite released for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 players quickly found out that they were unable to tie their Epic Games account to the Switch version of the game. This, combined with the absence of cross-platform play with the Playstation 4, caused an influx of drama and memes circulating around the web regarding Sony’s exclusivity and their bar on privatizing their network. After the news broke out, Sony told the BBC “We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.” disappointing gamers on all platforms.
Recently, Microsoft and Nintendo have been capitalizing on the cross-platform drama by collaborating with Minecraft’s release for the Nintendo Switch.
