With the new round of the Console Wars about to begin, both sides are busily reinforcing their strengths. Sony is leaning heavily into their exclusive lineup while Microsoft’s plans are funnelling into the Xbox Game Pass. With such diverse tactics, it could be anyone’s, though I’m sure everyone has their choices.
This makes the new announcement about Crystal Dynamics’ new game hard to take for some, with others considering it fair play. Exclusive content, whether timed or not, is a tactic that both companies use, so its hard to deem it unfair. Sony will have exclusive content for Marvel’s Avengers for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
The Sinister Nix
The first sign something was amiss came with everyone’s favourite web-slinger. Message boards fired up in anger at the mention of Spider-Man as an exclusive character to Sony’s console. Crystal Dynamics stated recently that Spider-Man will swing onto the PlayStation consoles as part of an update, the second additional character for the game; the first being Hawkeye, available everywhere.
Spider-Man will appear with “an in-game event featuring unique challenges.” He will have upgrades like the other six heroes, with “custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, Stark Industries, and more.”
As if that weren’t enough, today Crystal Dynamics announced more exclusive content, and it is significant. Players will have access to cosmetics for all heroes 30 days before PC and Xbox players will. What does it include? One legendary skin and emote, one epic takedown animation, and one nameplate per hero.
On top of that, PlayStation Plus subscribers receive even more! Subscribers will get a rare skin, a nameplate, and 100 in-game credits each post-launch hero (e.g. Hawkeye). While these extras will arrive on the other platforms, those player will have to either purchase or earn the rewards. There will also be Community Challenges across all platforms, but PlayStation will have some you can’t get anywhere else. The rewards from those challenges are unavailable elsewhere.
If you have a PlayStation and love The Avengers, then you’re in luck, because Sony will have exclusive content for Marvel’s Avengers. It’s not a deal-breaker for other platforms, but it will entice players to play it on a certain console.
PlayStation 4 users will have the chance to play the early beta, opening in chunks through August. Marvel’s Avengers proper will release on September 4th, 2020 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will release later.
