Sony is not quite done experimenting on hardware currently in the market, even with the end of the PlayStation 4’s life cycle coming to a close. Whilst Sony have been focusing their efforts into areas such as Virtual Reality and streaming with PlayStation Now, there are a few aspects of the PlayStation 4 that haven’t been altered a whole lot since its release.
One of those aspects would be the DualShock 4, which hasn’t been met with many changes even from its previous version, the DualShock 3. A light bar, a touch pad in the center, thicker and a more durable feeling– that was about the extent of their innovation, at least to the technologically deficient (of which I am a member). While those additions were great in their own right, Sony hasn’t had the inclination to delve into their controller designs like Microsoft has.
Sony has just announced the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment. Fortunately, the addition plugs into the bottom of the Dualshock 4, adding the extra buttons without changing the ergonomics of the controller. Sony’s DualShock 4 is meant more for competitive players, though probably handy to almost any gamer, this attachment “elevates your gameplay by delivering more versatility and performance”.
The two back buttons on the attachment can “map up to 16 different actions” and it also includes an “integrated OLED display that provides real time information around button assignments.”There can be 3 of these “profiles” saved at a time, and gives the player the ability to remap buttons on the fly. Most importantly, for those who have a wired headset, it comes with a headset pass-through, so there won’t be the hard choice of either extra buttons or audio.
Players looking to tweak their controllers won’t have to wait long, either. Sony’s DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment will be released on January 23, 2020, and it will only set you back $29.99 USD. So make sure your DualShock 4 is ready, because 2020 is the year it may have to button up.
