After days of speculation, Square Enix has finally revealed the Collector’s Edition for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age coming to PlayStation 4 this summer.
The reveal continues the trend of Square Enix releasing a Collector’s Edition for HD remasters, starting with Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X. Just like previous Collector’s Editions, The Zodiac Age is only available from the Square Enix Online Store.
Aside from the game and the limited edition steelbook that one might expect, the Collector’s Edition comes with mini-busts of five bosses, a limited edition soundtrack, six art cards and some DLC for the price of $199USD.
While the content looks pretty good — the five figures are more than expected, and the art cards look to be sets based on individual characters and the world of Ivalice — it is frustrating that it is once again a Square Enix Online Store exclusive.
My personal experiences ordering from the Square Enix Online Store have always led to disappointment because of missed delivery dates.
When I order from Amazon, for example, I always receive my games a day or two early or the morning of release. With the Square Enix Online Store, I have never received a game when anticipated. Part of this is because I live in Canada, but I still feel like more planning could go into making the product available quickly.
With Final Fantasy XV, for example, I paid more than $200USD for the game, and I got it two days after release. I was not alone in waiting, as many others on Twitter voiced their concern, but it was still frustrating.
How can something be advertised as the ultimate edition of the game, if it doesn’t arrive in for the release of the game?
While it seems like things might not change for this release, I do think later releases could include a limited time digital copy so the games could be enjoyed prior to arrival. They’ve done this with Final Fantasy XIV, so it could be possible to do it with other games.
But if you can deal with waiting to get your hands on the Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, it does look like there’s a good assortment of content for loyal fans to enjoy.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age launches July 11, 2017 on the PlayStation 4.
