Today, Nintendo hosted a live stream highlighting new announcements from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Super Smash Bros is a fighting game made for Nintendo consoles and has been a part of the Nintendo line up since 1999 when the first Super Smash Bros game launched on the Nintendo 64. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be the definitive Super Smash Bros game when it launches for the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018.
During the live stream, it was revealed that Simon and Richter Belmont from the Castlevania series would be included as new, playable characters. They will have their own Castlevania stage based on Dracula’s Castle featuring 34 unique tracks. An assist trophy featuring Dracula’s son was announced alongside these characters.
Following the Castlevania themed announcements, two new echo chaeacters were revealed. Echo Fighters is a new term in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, denoting their similar features to characters already on the roster. The first one was Chrom, an echo fighter for Roy. The second was Dark Samus, an echo fighter of Samus from the Metriod series. That was not all for character reveals.
In a surprise announcement, a reveal at the end of the stream announced King K.Rool from the Donkey Kong Series as a playable character. He will join the fray alongside the other fighters when the game arrives later this year.
A vast amount of returning stages were also showed such as Pokemon Stadium and Summit. The amount of stages per Smash Bros title was also shown, and it was incredible to see that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features a total of 103 playable stages from the very start. That insane amount of stages was made even more incredible with the addition of the newly announced “Stage Morph” setting, allowing players to select any two stages and have them morph into each other during the battle. The insane amount of stages are complimented by an amazing music selection. There are more than 800 tracks of music in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which adds up to more than 28 hours of music.
Squad Strike is a new 3v3 or 5v5 battle mode in which players pit each other against a mixture of their favorite characters. Other modes such as Classic mode, and 8-player Smash were also confirmed, with a new mode being announced at a later date.
The Nintendo Direct covered some of the new items to be found in the game upon launch. New items include the self-described banana gun, firing one powerful bullet before becoming a tripping hazard on the ground. One of our favorites was Death’s Scythe, a weapon that instantly KO’s enemies with high damage. Other items also include The Killing Edge, Bomber, and a Staff which fires a projectile, doing more damage to your opponent the further away they are. Along with those new items, some new Pokemon were added to the already large collection of available Pokemon assists in the game, such as Alohan Vulpix.
Plenty more details such as the specific movesets of the fighters, the brand new main menu, and additional game settings that were field can be found on the game’s official website. One thing is for sure; Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is shaping up to not only be one of the best Super Smash Bros games, but maybe one of the best games in recent years.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release on December 7th, 2018, for the Nintendo Switch.
