The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has always been a favourite cartoon of mine. It’s hard to say what makes it so special, but I still feel joy whenever TMNT is properly done; I’m looking at you Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This made the new announcement all the more exciting for me. On Wednesday, developers Tribute Games showed TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. The game is looking suitably retro for the publishers behind Streets of Rage 4 (Dotemu). Dotemu also completed additional development and publishing work on Windjammers 1 & 2, as well as Ys titles.
Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go
The side-scrolling camera harkens back to Turtles in Time, and the action looks to reintroduce the chaos of beat-em-up’s. Better yet, the characters are designed after their 1987 counterparts. Considering Tribute Games worked on the TMNT Gameboy Advance game, they have some inkling of what the fans expect of such a game.
“Bash your way through gorgeous pixel art environments and slay tons of hellacious enemies,” says the press release. As usual, players will choose their turtle at the beginning of their game. Each turtle has his own traits and moves, so learning each turtle’s style will be part of the fun and challenge.
If you were concerned about the multiplayer– don’t be. They assured people that up to 4 players could play simultaneously. Any less would have been blasphemous. So while you can take on the Foot Clan, and ultimately Shredder, alone, why not grab a few ninja buddies?
Some of the features include gorgeous pixel-art graphics, old-school gameplay with new mechanics, and iconic TMNT characters, locations and vehicles. This includes Beebop, Rocksteady, Dimension X, pizza… all the turtle staples.
Also, the trailer’s theme is sung by Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), and uses the original cartoon’s theme song. Say no to that!
