The PlayStation 5 is finally releasing next week, bringing with it a whole new generation of exciting games! With the previous generation being a huge success, it’s time we take a look back at our top 5 PlayStation 4 games! As always, we will be leaving out any remakes/remasters of any kind to allow the main games of the generation shine; and these are of course just an opinion!
#5: Horizon Zero Dawn
Developed by Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn is an exceptional open world action role-playing game! Taking place in a world overrun by machines, you play as Aloy as you explore the lush world around you. With an amazing character focused plot with surprises around every corner; this game is worth playing for the story alone.
As all games on this list, the game is set in the third-person view and features the typical movement that you would expect from a game like this. What makes the gameplay stand out is the combat with the machines; shooting them with arrows is a fever dream, but taking them down with tripwires, explosives and even spears is an absolute joy. It’s overall a fantastic game that is fun to play and one of PlayStation’s best exclusives!
#4: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Developed by Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is a full on action-adventure game concluding the story of legendary Nathan Drake. Taking place a certain number of years since the previous entry, Drake has been retired with his wife Elena; missing the adventurous excitement of his old life. One thing leads to another as he is brought out of retirement when his thought to be dead brother Sam shows up.
Following this is the intense gameplay that the franchise is known for! From sneaking around enemies, tense melee combat, explosive firefights and insane platforming sequences; the game is pure fun and full of adventure! Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is a worthy entry to the franchise and one of PlayStation 4’s best offerings!
#3: Marvel’s Spider-Man
Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a open world superhero action game featuring everybody’s favourite wall crawler! The game takes place later in Peter Parker’s career as Spider-Man, as is a 23-year old college graduate; struggling to balance his personal life with his superhero one. With a great heartful story of a hero rising through darkness, this Spider-Man title may be the greatest yet!
The gameplay is where this game truly shines; with a completely open world Manhattan New York to explore and enhanced combat! Swinging around the city has never felt more satisfying or free, and with a deep combat system which includes gadgets; players can truly feel like Spider-Man! This is a must play for PlayStation 4 owners, especially those looking forward to the upcoming spinoff Spider-Man: Miles Morales when the PlayStation 5 launches!
#2: Bloodborne
Developed by FromSoftware, Bloodborne is a strategic weapon-based combat game; similar to Dark Souls, as it’s the game developer. Taking place in a gothic city called Yharnam, inspired by the Victorian era, whose inhabitance have been infected with a blood borne disease. Playing as a customized Hunter, players must find the source of the plague while unravelling the dark mysteries of the city.
As expected, the gameplay is very Souls-like; meaning it features very high risk and reward styled gameplay. The gameplay is extremely fast paced, making your character quite agile as you take on hordes of enemies at once. With a gratifying gameplay system, a good challenge and unique enemies to fight; Bloodborne is absolutely among PlayStation 4’s finest.
#1: God of War
Developed by Santa Monica Studio, God of War is the forth entry into the popular franchise; featuring intense over the shoulder combat in the realm of Norse mythology. Taking place decades after God of War III, Kratos and his son Atreus embark on an adventure to bring his deceased wife’s ashes to the highest peak of the Nine Realms.
God of War’s gameplay is fun, brutal and rewarding; with a greater focus on complex combat rather than button mashing. The game features a fixed camera from third person; allowing greater focus on direct combat, including gruesome finisher moves and assistance from Atreus upon command. With it’s incredible combat, stellar story & characters, and a beautiful world to explore; God of War is the best PlayStation 4 game ever made!

The PlayStation 4 has had an absolutely legendary run; with quite a few exclusive games that will be remembered for decades to come! We’re glad to take a good look at our favourite PlayStation 4 games and appreciate their achievements. Of course, this ranking is just one opinion and there is no correct or incorrect answers; so we’d love to see yours as well!
