Warning! Incoming silliness! In the newest instalment of the Yakuza series, a new(ish) protagonist will be taking over. Ryu ga Gotoku Studios and SEGA have showcased the upcoming combat set for us. Check it out in this goofy Yakuza: Like a Dragon job trailer.
Enter (kind of) Ichiban Kasuga. A career gangster who went to jail for his clan, only to find himself betrayed upon release. Shot and left for dead, he must fight his way from rock bottom through the underbelly of modern-day Japan.
Let’s talk the trailer, shall we? Yakuza: Like a Dragon has turn-based combat set in classic RPG style, with the goofy upgrades you would expect from the Yakuza series. 19 different outrageous jobs are in the game, and in the trailer we get a taste of a few. The Breaker allows you to dish out some b-boy violence, almost like an urban Capoeira. As an Idol you can have your fans come to your aid, or play some Russian Roulette as a Dealer.
The Host has you pulling out moves reminiscent of wacky Japanese television, including smacking your enemies with a birthday cake. Cook the perfect omelette, then sear the enemies face with a hot skillet as The Chef. These and more are meant to keep combat fresh and exciting throughout Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
I say Kasuga is only new-ish because this is technically his second appearance as protagonist. The free-to-play collectable card game spin-off Ryu ga Gotoku Online (or Yakuza Online) was Kasuga’s first appearance back in 2018. Of course, this was only a Japan release, so this will be our first real taste of the character worldwide.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is out now in Japan, and releases November 13th, 2020 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 worldwide. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 dates TBA.
