The best way to start this article is explaining the Japanese trope of a Yandere. A Yandere is a character in anime, who is so obsessed with a person (generally the Main character) that they will stalk him/her and murder anyone they deem a threat to the relationship. So naturally, not exactly the kind of person you would want to hang around. This trope is present in a couple of darker anime, such as Mirai Nikki or “Future Diaries”. So naturally, Yandere Simulator is a game where you play as a yandere, and your goal is to sabotage any rival that tries to get close to “Senpai” by any means necessary.
This all started in 2014, when a single guy proposed an idea on 4chan about a stealth game based on this very premise. Since then, YandereDev as he’s known, has worked tirelessly to get all the mechanics he and the community wants in the game. Along with the help of some volunteers, he has kept putting more and more updates on the game, releasing videos each week about the game’s progress. The game itself, though only in Alpha form, has been ‘Lets Played‘ by several Youtubers such as Markiplier, Azzman and several others. I think a huge part of this success is because of how different of a horror game this truly is. Instead of being stalked and preyed on, you are the predator. You commit heinous acts to reach your goal, break peoples minds and body to keep Senpai away from threats. You play as the monster, which is a very interesting perspective for a game to take.
It’s a niche that has not been hit very often, and not done very well, but YandereDev has certainly shown that his game is very in depth, and there is a huge following behind it. According to him, the part of the game that he can do on his own is about 44% done, in which he would go to Kickstarter to try and get the funds to get professional help to complete it. Though he started in 2014, he said in the video that the game may not come out until 2019, which he even admits is a long wait for the fans. But he wants it to be done right, he wants the game to be his dream and what the community has been waiting for and expecting.
All the best wishes to YandereDev and his game, hopefully we can see it launched very soon. For more information about the game, including gameplay, you can visit their official Youtube page by clicking here.
