Today, Playtonic Games, the studio populated by almost exclusively former Rare employees, has revealed a gigantic cache of information regarding their Kickstarter-funded Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor: Yooka-Laylee.
This 3D platforming collectathon, starring the titular chameleon and bat (in that order), will detail their quest to collect the magical “Pagies” in order to discover new worlds within the Grand Tomes, and stop an evil publishing corporation, led by the nefarious Capital B, a suit-wearing bee armed with bee puns galore a rather familiar object affixed to his cane, and his sidekick, a exosuit wearing scientist duck by the name of Dr. Quack, from stealing all the world’s literature and recycling it for their own profits.
Aiding the heroic duo through their literary adventure are a pants-wearing snake name Trowzer, who acts as the equivalent of Bottles from Banjo-Kazooie, teaching the pair new moves in exchange for the collectable “Quills”, and Dr. Puzz, an octopus, and the former colleague of Dr. Quack, who allows you to transform, similarly to the role filled by Mumbo Jumbo.
Finally, they’ve announced the “Toybox” demo, a reward promised to Kickstarter backers with the intention of showcasing the game’s core gameplay elements, for a July release. They’ve also taken the liberty of expanding the demo from a one-room browser game into a “significant chunk of playable content”.
Yooka-Laylee is scheduled to launch later this year.
