Delivering on a three year-old promise, Microsoft is now allowing for any Xbox One console to become a development console, completely free of charge.
This option comes from an optional download on Xbox Live called “Dev Mode”. While this mode is still in preview for the time being, anyone can download the app to unlock the Xbox One’s development capabilities using it’s Universal Windows Program (UWP). While the development tool will enable the Xbox One to be recognized as a “Windows 10 Device”, not much more work is needed to be done to develop Xbox One games using this tool.
Microsoft stressed that the program is still a work in progress, so some users may encounter issues throughout their experience. They will aim to fix all of the issues when the full program rolls out later this Summer.
