With the PlayStation Vita no longer in circulation, Ys: Memories of Celceta found a new home– the PlayStation 4. It’s easy to see why– Sony has supported JRPG games for awhile now. It makes sense, when you consider that Sony, at least over the last few years, has started leaning into story-driven games. What genre has lengthier games, more strategic battles and epic storylines than JRPG’s? However, it has to compete against AAA JRPG’s like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Persona 5 Royal.
Ys Into It…
Ys: Memories of Celceta is an action/role-playing game originally released on PlayStation Vita. Originally released in Japan in 2012, it was brought to North America the next year. It was also released on PlayStation 4 in Japan in May 2019. Developed by Nihon Falcom and published worldwide on PC by Xseed Games, it’s considered to be the 4th game in the Ys series. The usual protagonist, Adol Christin, begins the game with amnesia as he explores Celceta forest. Like other games in the series, the battles are in real-time with standard attacks and Skills.
The release date was June 9th, 2020, meaning you can buy it now, both physically and digitally. Fans of the series, however, may want to opt for the physical edition. Entitled the “Timeless Adventurer Edition”, it will come with a soundtrack CD (previously only released in Japan) “Ys 25th Anniversary Pack” and a dozen 4 x 6 art cards that highlight various female characters from the series. Luckily, the digital deluxe version will also include the soundtrack. The usual perks are included: 60 FPS, full HD visuals, and both English and Japanese voice-acting. You’ll get all of that for $30.
So if you either missed out on the PlayStation Vita or want to upgrade a game you’ve played before, this could be for you. Considering the game received positive reviews at its initial launch, I can’t see this version dropping those scores. Go map that forest!
