We finally live in a world where Kingdom Heart III is around the corner. After years of endless teasing, Square Enix has finally unveiled the box art for the action RPG’s next chapter, along with a new trailer for the game.
“The world of Big Hero 6 is just one of the expansive worlds in the massive Kingdom Hearts universe,” Square Enix said in the press release. “The trailer also shows off new footage from the Disney and Pixar worlds of Frozen, Monsters, Inc., Tangled and Pirates of the Caribbean, while shedding new light on the Kingdom Hearts storyline as well as a first glimpse of a fan-favorite character.”
I’ve always loved the cover art for these games, because it really shows a lot of symbolism and hints at what fans might expect to see in the games. Kairi, Riku, and Sora are together in the art with little separating them. King Mickey looks to be reuniting with Donald and Goofy, but who’s to say if that means anything? Square Enix has been playing with our minds for so long—nothing feels real anymore.
There’s a lot to unpack here, and I’ll leave you to unpack most of it. But keep in mind that Square Enix did emphasize the atmosphere in their official release:
“The artwork showcases a variety of characters from the Kingdom Hearts series against the endless sunset,” Square Enix said in the release.
What does the endless sunset represent? We’ll find out on January 29, 2019.
