Valve will be pulling the plug on any gambling and lotto websites that work with OpenID API systems on Steam.
Valve’s own Erik Johnson stated in an official blog post:
“Using the OpenID API and making the same web calls as Steam users to run a gambling business is not allowed by our API nor our user agreements. We are going to start sending notices to these sites requesting they cease operations through Steam, and further pursue the matter as necessary. Users should probably consider this information as they manage their in-game item inventory and trade activity.”
The company will be sending legal cease & desist forms to those in violation of their policies starting today which may include sites such as Steamloto.com, which have been part of a recent scandal between popular Youtubers PsiSyndicate and TmarTn.
Valve introduced the in-game item trading feature for Steam in 2011.
