Prior to May 3rd, if a Steam gift was refused, you’d be stuck with a useless copy of a game you probably don’t want sitting in your inventory until you found someone else (who also probably didn’t really want it) to give it to.
“Steam Gifting will now be a system of direct exchange from gift buyer to gift receiver, and we will be retiring the Gift to E-mail and Gift to Inventory options.” Valve said.
Luckily, Valve has finally noticed that issue. In a recent blog post, they outline some important changes they’ve made to their gifting system to make generosity even easier. Now if a gift is refused, a full refund is given to the purchaser in place of the copy of the game in their inventory.
Also, thankfully, you no longer have to worry if the game is going to work or not when sending it to someone in a different region. Either it’s guaranteed to work, or they’ll let you know that it won’t work before you purchase, removing a good chunk of trial and error from the process.
