“Oh, we’re finally doing this, are we? ‘Cause I was going to make a sandwich.” Y’all I haven’t felt this giddy for a game trailer in I don’t even know how long- so let’s dig in!
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, let me paint the scene: Microsoft held their Xbox Games Showcase, including a bonus in-depth look at Starfield (which I’m sure will be talked about more in the near future…a lot more, but I digress). Xbox came in with its best foot forward, showcasing one of my most anticipated titles in ages, a long-awaited new installment of Fable!
That’s right folks, for all you Chicken Chasers and Arse Faces out there, you will once again have the opportunity to dive into the realm of heroes. Playground Studios is taking on a pretty tall task in rebooting such an iconic series. If you haven’t heard about Playground Studios, you probably aren’t alone. I didn’t recognize them by name, but their past work has been breathtaking, to say the least. They are actually the studio responsible for the Forza Horizon series.
Even those who aren’t interested in driving games must admit that each new entry into the Forza series is, truly a thing of beauty. Well, now you are going to get to see what it’s like to play as the legendary Hero as you romp through (what I can only assume to be Albion as of this writing) in a game utilizing that same ForzaTech game engine used to create those beautiful Forza Horizon titles. This alone will be something to behold, considering both that the original titles were created using the Havok engine, and that there have been some very significant upgrades to game engines in general since we last saw a new installment in the series back in 2012.
During the Xbox Games Showcase, we got to get the best look so far at the care and detail put into this reboot. Right off the bat, we start with Richard Ayoade as Dave in an interview-style narrative showcasing all of the things that those who love Fable have come to expect from the titles – Hecklers, public drinking, roughing up bandits, cool spells, Balverines, and of course – kicking chickens. Half the magic is watching the trailer so I’ll leave it up to you from here. So far I have no notes for Playground Studios. The quality of the trailer presented actually left fans questioning if it was real (or is this just fantasy?), and the devs working on the game flattered. Seeing just this glimpse of the love and care put into this reboot- if it is any reflection of what we can expect from the full game upon release then we should all be in for a treat.
