A brand new retro style beat’em’up has released for the Xbox One. Coffee Crisis is the latest game to release by Mega Cat Studios and features a ton of “Coffee-fuelled” action. The game has a classic side-scrolling beat ‘em up with a graphic style that presents itself to one of the retro games.
In Coffee Criss, the player assumes the role of one of two playable characters, each with their own unique traits. Players can interact with the environment, throwing and destroying a variety of objects in the beautiful hand drawn title. The game has many landmarks for players to recognize, such as PNC Park and Grandview Boulevard, designed in the pixel world to look nostalgic. The game also sees music from the metal band Greywalker, as if it didn’t feel like Pittsburgh already.
Coffee Crisis pays homage to the nineties, featuring video games that had classic arcades and 16-bit brawlers. Being both a solo and co-op game allows players to experience it in different ways and approach the levels carefully or viciously depending on their own play style. With coffee being the main highlight, players fight their ways through an army of aliens using anything at their disposal. Yes, that means the coffee too. The aliens, named the Smurglian race, have come to Earth to steal humans four most prized commodities: Metal music, the best coffee, cat videos, and all of the WiFi. Without these, well the human race can’t advance.
It’s up to the player to take control of the Coffeehouse baristas, Nick and Ashley, as they defend the citizens from these evil aliens and make sure that coffee and music are kept safe. If players find it too easy to keep the world safe from aliens, there is always Death Metal Mode, which allows an extreme difficulty level for those who drink their coffee piping hot. Coffee Crisis was already available for the PC, and strangely enough, the SEGA Genesis. Those feeling extra nostalgic can purchase Coffee Crisis for the SEGA Genesis here.
Coffee Crisis is available on the Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux and Sega Genesis (as a cartridge).
