New Fire Emblem Engage Trailer “Engages” Players

  • 24 November 2022
  • Jesse Navratil

A new gameplay trailer today over on Nintendo’s YouTube channel for the upcoming Intelligent Systems game, Fire Emblem Engage. The new trailer showcases one of the new mechanics of the series, Emblem Rings, and how they will enhance your gameplay.

What are Emblems?

The trailer starts by explaining that your units can be enhanced using rings called “Emblem Rings.” These rings hold power from past heroes of previous Fire Emblem games, like Marth, Byleth, Lyn, and Corrin. These Emblems take on a form much like “Stands” from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, enhancing your main units’ stats and giving them special skills while activated.

While “engaged” with your unit, you may also fuse with them, transforming your unit into another form. It’s not just an aesthetic change; you also gain access to the weapon your Emblem uses as well! To go even further, Engage Skills and Attacks also unlock as well. Engage Attacks are extremely flashy attacks, perfect for formidable foes that won’t go down easily.

The Emblems So Far

We then transition to giving a few Emblems time to shine during the video. It starts with Sigurd, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. He also makes an appearance in Awakening and Heroes, but still, he is a very niche pick among all the heroes showcased in the video. Sigurd rides in on a noble steed, giving massive movement capabilities while Engaged. “Override,” one of Sigurd’s abilities, mows through a line of foes, damaging them and placing your unit in a perfect flanking spot.

The video then proceeds to show off the rest of the Emblems and some of their abilities. Celica, recently from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, is next to show off her stuff. She comes with an extremely hand double attack skill. “Warp Ragnarok” is another skill that allows the user to teleport to a faraway spot and attack right after.

Next up is Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates. Corrin comes with “Dragon Vein,” which is a multi-use skill. It can remove hazards from the terrain, like fire, or create healing tiles for your units to replenish their health. “Torrential Roar” looks to have quite a bit of utility, damaging enemies in front of the unit and adding a “Water” effect to the terrain. The trailer, though, doesn’t explain the other de-buffs inflicted on the enemy. Draconic Hex and Dreadful Aura show up after the attack goes off. We will have to wait for the game’s full release to see what they do!

Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses instructs their way onto the field next! The “Instruct” skill is used to boost nearby units’ stats, like Speed, to turn the tide of battle. It will be interesting to see if you can change what stat gets boosted. “Goddess Dance” will enhance stats and give units another turn after they have finished.

Lyn, from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, blows away the opposition from afar with her bow. “Astra Storm” is an attack that hits the enemy up to 5 times. Unfortunately, that is all the trailer has to show for Lyn.

The catch with “Engaging.”

Engaging will only last three turns, so using it at the perfect time will be important for your strategy. But don’t be too stingy, the Engage meter can refill as you continue through battle, so you will have plenty of opportunities to use it.

Fire Emblem Engage

Even though there are popular Emblems to use in Fire Emblem Engage, the trailer reassures there are plenty of characters to fall in love with. They are all also capable of equipping Emblem Rings, leaving no unit alienated from your team. This opens up many potential combinations of units and Emblems to try out! This will undoubtedly encourage multiple playthroughs and conversations between friends to see which pairs they made!

Fire Emblem Engage will only arrive on the Nintendo Switch on January 20th, 2023. You can also check out more videos of the game on Nintendo’s YouTube Channel.
