Pikmin 4 Release Date Announced

  • 10 February 2023
  • Blake Mccarty

On September 13th, 2022, Nintendo showed off a teaser for Pikmin 4. On February 8th, we finally got a full trailer showing off all the new mechanics. Nintendo started off the show with some nice piano music and a recognizable spaceship heading towards a planet. As the ship enters the atmosphere, the floral title pops up Pikmin 4.

As the trailer continues, we get some camera pans of what looks like maybe a park or a daycare-like facility with a garden. The ship then lands at the end of a trail and out pops your character. We then get a quick showing of finding the red Pikmin as well as the red, yellow, and blue types coming out of the pod. After the main three are with you, then we get a showing of the usual gameplay. Breaking down barriers, using the reds to fight a FIery Blowhog, and moving obstacles.

New Game: New Abilities

Several new abilities are shown during this 3-minute-long trailer. The first one we see is Pikmin creating a climbable wall, however, it is currently unknown if we need to do something special in order to trigger this ability. We then see a new type of Pikmin in action, an ice Pikmin. These can freeze enemies to make it easier to fight as well as freeze lakes so you can walk on them to get to new areas.

Now comes the best part of the trailer, we now have a dog companion named Oatchi to help us. Oatchi is shown to be able to barrel through some clay pots as well as pull enemies to the pod by itself. They also show Oatchi being used as a boat of sorts and able to traverse puddles keeping all the Pikmin safe.

Story Time

It seems like the story this time around, besides finding treasure and food, is to find lost castaways. Oatchi seems like it can help in that regard by sniffing around for them. The trailer shows you find one and then immediately fight a boss. This boss has four long legs and a disco ball for a body that you throw the Pikmin at. They then show what looks like a Bulborb queen giving birth to several Bulborb larvae.

It looks like the underground is back. You can move up and down into different levels so we shall see how intricate they will make it. We end the trailer with Oatchi and the rescued castaway rising up into space ship surrounded by 3 other characters. Does that mean we will get four-player co-op functionality? We will have to wait for more information as well as what’s going on with the glowing red-eyed Bulborb shown at the very end.

Pikmin 4

That’s all for now, but stay tuned for our updates as new information is revealed! Pikmin 4 releases on July 21, 2023, only for Nintendo Switch.
