SkateBIRD, the skateboarding indie game about doing your best, has received a new trailer, which premiered at IGN’s Summer of Gaming event. The trailer finally gave us the summer release date, with the game dropping onto PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
SkateBIRD initially looks like a Tony Hawk’s game, except you play as birds. The birds skate around environments which, to humans, are normal everyday objects. But through the eyes of the birds, bendy straws are grind rails, pizza boxes are huge ramps, and sinks are, well, sinks are half-pipes, obviously.
Alongside the announcement was the release of the game’s soundtrack. Matching the “chill but do your best” vibe of SkateBIRD, the soundtrack is full of soft beats for you to chill to as you kickflip off a monitor. The game features many adorable bird-sized parks for players to master their tricks in, with simple and familiar controls to fans of the genre. (Also the ability to flap your wings. That’s an important one.)
But what is all this skating in aid of, anyway? Well, life is lonely as a bird, and your Big Friend is hardly ever home. The more you skate, however, the more friends you’re bound to make. As bird friends come to check out your park, and introduce you to new areas, they might even help you to see if you can fix your Big Friend’s life. That’s assuming you haven’t smashed all their mugs.
Developed by Glass Bottom Games, who make cosy games about animals doing people things, SkateBIRD isn’t just about doing your best. With fancy clothing to find, secret mixtapes of new music, and birds that need your help, it’s truly a game that asks what it means to be a bird that skates.
“Since launching the SkateBIRD Kickstarter in 2019, we’ve worked to make the best game about skateboarding birds that the world has ever seen. We can’t wait to share it with everyone this August.”
Megan Fox, Glass Bottom Games founder
SkateBIRD is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S via backward compatibility on August 12th, 2021 for $19.99. It will also launch on Xbox Game Pass for Xbox systems and Windows 10. In the meantime, why not check out the SkateBIRD Twitter for all the clips of tricks, and to hear from Skatebird himself!
