We open to an acoustic guitar playing the blues and echoing through the swamplands of the southern United States. “Death don’t have no mercy in this land”, but it sure does lend a beautiful setting. What appears to be a boat-filling station and dock set the scene as a young woman approaches the giant playing the blues. Holding up a piece of paper, she asks the giant, as well as some of the local wildlife if they have seen this crudely drawn monster.
As you may expect, a giant monster with a silhouette matching the creature drawn on the paper emerges from behind the young woman. As she turns around, she pulls out what appears to be a magical top which she uses to weave an arc of magic.
I am and forever will be a huge sucker for a good trailer. The art style here is reminiscent of the Borderlands cell shading, but with a rougher look that leans more towards a stop motion/claymation style. The music is soulful and the effects are clean and impressive. So impressive in fact, that I took a little stroll over to the Compulsion Games website to see what else I could find. As a brief synopsis of the game, the developers wrote, “As Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family’s shared past and -if she’s lucky – find her way to a place that feels like home.“
This has certainly piqued my interest and seeing that it’s coming from the studio responsible for We Happy Few, I’m sure that there will be plenty to look forward to. Though, with no set release date it may be some time before we see more than just this little teaser. When released, the title will be available on Steam, Windows 10/11, and Xbox X|S. It’s also a Game Pass day one release, so good vibes all around thus far. Cheers!
