It’s that time of year again! All of the prominent industry leaders are announcing their upcoming releases for us to get excited about. With Summer Game Fest Showcase, PlayStation Showcase, Xbox Showcase, Ubisoft Forward, and Capcom Showcase already having taken place, there’s bound to be something for everyone to be hyped for! One pleasant surprise shown so far was a glimpse at some gameplay from Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars Outlaws.
We start the trailer following a dog-like creature as it approaches our playable character, whose name is Kay. We join Kay as she is in the midst of a stealth mission. She incapacitates someone and silently navigates her environment till she comes to find a platform. Kay’s creature sidekick “Nix” is able to aid her in activating the platform by pushing a button.
Unfortunately, Kay’s stealth eventually fails her and she is discovered, resulting in a shootout with several enemies. When a shielded enemy approaches, the gameplay shows off the ability to switch out the type of laser utilized by our gun. Kay switches the gun to an electric option and is able to disarm the shield and incapacitate the enemy. Kay is then able to task her sidekick Nix with retrieving a new weapon from a previously defeated enemy.
Looking to make a quick escape from the scene of the shootout- Kay runs away, using a grappling hook to get down to the ground, and mounts a speeder. As she is racing away, the enemies catch up and now we are engaged in a speeder chase over a rocky terrain. Kay activates a “Dead Eye” type ability (ala Red Dead Redemption) allowing her to swiftly take the enemy speeders out.
Kay then arrives at a settlement named Jaunta’s Hope, in order to meet a contact, unload the spoils of her stealth mission, and receive payment. As Kay’s conversation with her contact progresses, she is presented with a choice of whether or not to bribe an Empire goon. When Kay ultimately chooses not to bribe the individual in question, she ultimately becomes wanted, with her face and details being broadcast on every nearby screen.
Despite this unexpected hurdle, Kay makes it to her ship and leaves the planet, only to be intercepted by several Tie Fighters. Luckily it seems that Kay is a fairly adept pilot, making some slick maneuvers, allowing her to make the hyperdrive jump and escape. The gameplay ends with Kay announcing that they can go anywhere they want. A montage is then shown of the adventures in store for Kay- showing off several different worlds, enemies, and fight sequences.
Star Wars Outlaws has been announced for a 2024 release, with no specific date provided yet. So far the game has been confirmed for Xbox, Playstation, and PC.
