Steam’s latest beta update enables the functionality for all games to make use of the Xbox One or Xbox 360 controllers, even if the software does not natively support it.
Besides fixing some pre-existing bugs, the newest beta update will allow any Steam game to become compatible with most controllers, including third-party controllers you can find on retailers shelves. Included is the ability to fully customize these devices, giving players complete freedom when configuring their gamepads to specific games. The potential downside to this, as of right now, is the feature is locked to one type of input, meaning the personalization and customization options are tied to one type of controller.
Any non-Xbox type controllers can still take advantage of this feature thanks to Valve’s implementation of the general x-input configuration. Most gamepads can be configured to work with any game offered through Steam, making each game accessible as possible.
Steam is available as a free download for PCs and Macs.
