Rare has finally shared what’s in store for its dedicated Sea of Thieves fanbase its first batch of free DLC. The Hungering Deep introduces a range of permanent features and a special limited-time campiagn.
“Coming May 29th, follow the trail of riddles and rumours to piece together what happened to ‘Merry’ Merrick, the proud owner of a pair of matching peg legs,” Rare said in a release. “Along the way, discover new features like the drum, ship’s flags, speaking trumpet (for shouting at other pirates) and selectable tattoos and scars (for looking good while shouting at other pirates)!”
While the items are permanently added to the game, the new campaign will only be available for a limited time. Rare has also announced that it will be including new threats below the surface of the ocean, obviously a reference to The Hungering Deep.
While some of the new features are fun or cosmetic, there’s two things that jump out as exciting. Speaking Trumpets will be used to communicate at a distance with other players. Rare says this can be used to communicate with others on the same voyage, but it’s not clear if it will enable players to filter based on channels—that would be a truly awesome addition to the game.
Rare is also adding Flags to the ships. This will let players communicate with other crews to warn them or show a friendly gesture. It will be interesting to see how many players use friendly communications to trap their foes.
The Hungering Deep drops for all Sea of Thieves players on May 29. Head over to the official site to learn more.
