Nintendo announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in their Nintendo Direct livestream at E3 2018.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate appears to be loosely based off of Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game. The game will feature the entire Super Smash Bros. series roster, including every character from Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. This means popular returning characters such as the Ice Climbers, Metal Gear Solid’s Snake, and Star Fox’s Wolf will return to the series. All downloadable characters from the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS versions of the games will also join the fray, including Bayonetta, Cloud, and Ryu.
Returning characters Lucina, Dark Pit and the introduction of Daisy are joining the battle as “Echo characters” who closely resemble Marth, Pit, and Peach respectively. They may feature slightly different movesets, but are introduced as clones rather than an individual fighter. The majority of returning characters will contain differences in their costumes and final smash mechanics. One of development team’s focus was streamlining the Final Smashes to put players back into the action faster.
Most of the levels featured across the Smash bros. franchise will be thrown in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Additionally, new game mechanics are being added to the game, including scaled damage for 1-on-1 battles, Shield timing, and more.
All amiibo related to their characters are compatible with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with Ridley and Inkling amiibo releasing at an undetermined date. The team also announced the development of more amiibo, including Daisy, but didn’t give specific details on when they would release.
Normally, we would post a recap of the events from Nintendo’s direct, but we feel there wasn’t enough news from the direct to warrant a recap article. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate took up the majority of the Nintendo Direct this morning.
