Eurogamer had the opportunity to interview Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and took the chance to inquire about several items including the production of a Super Mario Galaxy 3. While not confirming the game, he knows the popularity of the request for it and Miyamoto stated that if Nintendo were to develop Super Mario Galaxy 3, it would be for new hardware, which most likely suggests Nintendo’s upcoming console, the codenamed NX.
“[A new Mario Galaxy] is always in discussion, but even with Mario 64 there was a lot of feedback about motion sickness with the 3D or maybe us making it too difficult.”
It’s interesting to know that Miyamoto still takes the motion sickness feedback from Super Mario 64 seriously considering we’ve been gaming in 3D environments for 20 years. However, this directly relates to the New Super Mario Bros. series and why it exists:
“Going back to our roots and making New Super Mario Bros., anyone can play that, so that’s why we went back. We’re always thinking, ‘is there a middle ground where people who do enjoy the 3D worlds of Galaxy and those who enjoy New Super Mario Bros. can both enjoy it?’ We’re always looking at those opportunities.”
The recently released Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World games are perfectly harmonious in achieving that said middle ground; they feature a three dimensional playing field in linear based levels. This is unlike the aforementioned Super Mario 64 along with Super Mario Sunshine and the Super Mario Galaxy series which sport large, free-roamable levels.
“On the other hand, me and [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san, director of Galaxy, are always looking to challenge Galaxy and do another 3D action title, however we can’t make so many games at once in parallel. But as the hardware technology gets better and advances, I think there will be a lot of opportunity for both options.”
When asked what kind of hardware would be necessary for this title and if it would be for the Nintendo NX, Mr. Miyamoto vaguely responded:
“Wii U’s definitely good enough in terms of hardware performance, it is more the workload of the team. If you look at Star Fox Zero, the TV and GamePad are both rendered in 60 frames, so in total that’s 120 frames. It’s really just a matter of the CPU speed at this point.”
Let’s hope for the sake of Super Mario Galaxy’s future that the new Nintendo NX will have the CPU speed that Miyamoto believes will be required.
