After months of waiting, Nintendo has finally revealed more details regarding their newest home console, the Nintendo Switch.
Codenamed the Nintendo NX, Nintendo Switch will be Nintendo’s next gaming platform. The Nintendo Switch appears to be a handheld/console hybrid, capable of accepting cartridges. The trailer, shown below, shows off the Joy-Con controller. The controller itself acts as a handheld when it is not tethered to the console, offering up portable gaming to the console audience. Nintendo announced that the device would feature local wireless multiplayer, even when the handheld is detached from the console, making multiplayer gaming an option, even on the road.
“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”
Key developers have already registered their interest in the console, such as Bethesda, Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Ubisoft and much more. The trailer footage even showcases Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim running on the console, perhaps confirming the game would be available on the Nintendo Switch at launch.
Before today’s announcement, we knew next to nothing regarding Nintendo’s next home console. Fans have speculated throughout the year on what the console could be, which included some very convincing controllers. The only thing we knew for sure, was that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Just Dance 2017, Dragon Quest XI and a new Sonic title would be making its way to Nintendo’s future platform. Other rumors have pointed to new Pokemon and Mario titles being released within the first six months of release. Until today, nothing had been confirmed by Nintendo.
The Nintendo Switch will be released in March 2017.
