The Nintendo Switch will be the future home of Nintendo Gamecube video games if sources are to be trusted.
According to Eurogamer, three separate sources have confirmed that Nintendo Gamecube titles will be making their way to the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo e-shop. Nintendo tested the games Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee and are quoted to be fully playable on the Nintendo Switch. These titles are significant as they are all launch window consoles released for the Nintendo Gamecube in 2001.
Right now, Nintendo is testing Animal Crossing for the Nintendo Gamecube, which would make the fourth title available through the Nintendo Switch’s Virtual Console. There may be even more Gamecube games released with the Nintendo Switch by the time it launches, but EuroGamer’s sources are claiming that these four are for sure.
The report also suggests that Nintendo is investigating native support for the Gamecube Adapter which shipped alongside Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Wii U. However, Nintendo has not made a final decision on this feature.
Provided the report is accurate, the Nintendo Switch can see immense popularity with the competitive scene, especially with Super Smash Bros. Melee still leading massive game tournaments such as EVO.
At the time of this writing, there is no announcement regarding how many platforms will be supported by the Nintendo Switch, or if previous Virtual Console games purchased on the Nintendo Wii U will become compatible. Keep in mind that none of this information is official, so take the information lightly until the big ‘N’ officially announces the details.
The Nintendo Switch launches in March 2017.
