Niantic Labs is still planning to support Pokemon GO for the long run, despite the majority of their players dropping the game since its release last year.
In an interview with Niantic’s General Manager Yoshiji Kawashima, they hinted at several of the game’s upcoming events and updates. New in-game mechanics are planned to roll out in the coming months, which include raids, player vs. player battles, and the long-awaited player trading. Niantic did confirm that co-operative gameplay will arrive this Spring, but there isn’t any evidence on what these features may include.
“I hope you are looking forward to this huge event this summer.” Said Kawaskima. “Please look forward to it. Engineers are working hard now so that new functions can be implemented.”
One of the features advertised before the game’s announcement was massive battles with Legendary Pokemon. One of the actions shown taking place was with Mewtwo in New York Times Square, with thousands of gamers participating in an event to catch the elusive Pokemon. Such an event has yet to take place, and there have been no sightings of Mewtwo in Pokemon GO at the time of this writing, despite the second generation Pokemon already being rolled out
We should see these events roll out this Summer, but it isn’t yet known if the events will take place worldwide or only in specific regions. We should hear more about these updates in the coming months.
