We had the opportunity to try Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker at E3 this year and we have to say that it was an amazing title that all of us at Informed Pixel can’t wait to get our hands on. The one thing you have to keep in mind when Super Mario Maker is released later this year is that it has COMPLETE customization.
Want to put wings on a goomba and have it stacked on other goombas while they walk across a flying platform? Done. Have bloopers getting spit out of every damn pipe while you have coins continuously raining from the sky as you attempt to dodge the millions of enemies you placed on the ground? Done. The possibilities of Super Mario Maker are endless.
Let us talk about the editing tool. It is very easy to use with little to no maintenance required to build your own level. After building a mock up draft ourselves, we were able to test the stage to make sure it was playable. After you made sure you are able to make it through the course without too much difficulty, you can start adding the enemies and challenges your player might face. While the E3 demo didn’t have the full list of features that will be made available on launch, we were still able to make a challenging level in around five minutes. It was pretty amazing. We even had our Nintendo reps give it a whirl and they both had a tremendous amount of difficulty making it through our tyrannical creation.
While our time was limited, it did want us creating more. The tool was amazingly simple to create and erase content from the level, and the ability to test the level without any transition from creating to playing was really smooth. We will definitely be keeping an eye on this title when it is released on Sept. 11, so be sure to check out all of our coverage then!
