Darenn Keller, the solo developer who left Ubisoft to become an independent game developer, has created a survival builder that won’t take up hours of your time. Lueur and The Dim Settlers focus on minimalism, relaxing vibes, discovery, and a “dive right in” mentality. You can check out the “Dev Trailer” below for a brief overview of what to expect!
Right away, Lueur (French for flicker) draws you in with its comforting pixel aesthetic, thriving on simplicity and clear-cut mechanics. I don’t know about you, but I like my games to not have mountains of tutorial pages to read. Lueur expects you to explore, experiment, and get right to the point of video games – play and have fun. The barrier to entry is so thin, it would break by just looking at it, and that is what excites me the most about Lueur (besides many other reasons).
Lueur comes out with 3 modes right out of the gate, shaping the way you get into the nitty grity of building your city.
- Settler, a more forgiving user experience
- Survivor, for those looking to challenge themselves
- Deity, for those thirsting for a fast-paced challenge
Whichever mode you decide to choose, this city sim will challenge you in more ways than you would expect. One cool feature in Lueur is exciting mini-games you can play to gather resources for your city. The better you play, the more you’ll get from said resource. Most city sims give you a static return, but Lueur breathes fresh air into the genre with this neat mechanic.
Lueur and the Dim Settlers is available to wishlist on Steam, has a playable demo, and looks to release in late 2023. A later release on Nintendo Switch is planned as well. You can also check out Lueur: A Beacon In The Night, which Darenn created for a LOWREZJAM, and set the foundation for Dim Settlers.
