Fans rejoice! Nintendo has announced a new 2D Metroid platformer for the Nintendo 3DS.
Revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse Live event, Nintendo is currently in development for a reimagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus. Immediately following the announcement, Nintendo live-streamed official gameplay of the game which can be seen on their official website at the time of this writing.
The 2D platformers appear to take the appearance of the classic Metroid title, with reimagined visuals to fit the Nintendo 3DS hardware. In addition, our main protagonist Samus brings new abilities and moves to defeat her foes throughout the single-player experience.
Nintendo also announced that the game will support select amiibo upon launch, including the Samus amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series. In addition, two new amiibo will launch alongside the game: a squishy Metroid amiibo and a new Samus amiibo sporting the old Metroid II pose.
Metroid: Samus Returns releases on September 15th, 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS system family.
