In an interview with VentureBeat.com, Ingress developers Niantic revealed more information regarding their newly developed game, Pokemon Go, which the industry has seen very little of.
The developers talked about how the game will play, which is very similar to the way Ingress currently operates. They wanted to make the game as accessible as possible, by allowing players to encounter wild Pokemon within 5 minutes after they leave their house. The catch of this being that they may not encounter rare Pokemon this way.
In order to be successful in Pokemon Go, players will need to search in unique places such as historical landmarks, places of interest and more in order to catch more Pokemon. You will also need to trade with others in order to ‘Catch em’ all’ as many rare Pokemon are hidden all over the world, that is, unless you plan on travelling to every destination to capture every rare Pokemon. Certain Pokemon will also live in specific places, such as Water Pokemon living near bodies of water.
“Pokémon will live in different parts of the world depending on what type of Pokémon they are. Water Pokémon will live near the water. It may be that certain Pokémon will only exist in certain parts of the world. Very rare Pokémon may exist in very few places. But you can trade.”
Pokemon Go will also support Pokemon gyms with other players in the world. While the gyms will be rare, players will be able to compete against other players for the chance in earning some rewards and levelling their Pokemon.
The interview also discussed the details of the new device, the Pokemon Go Plus, a tool to help aide adventurers hunting for Pokemon. The device, which doubles as a watch, will vibrate and light up when you are near Pokemon. While not required, if you own the device, players will be able to capture Pokemon by hitting a combination of buttons, then view them on their smartphone later shall it not be readily available.
“Part of the idea of the game is, you’re outside and you can see beautiful things. If you’re always staring at your phone, you’re not seeing the world around you. We had brainstormed this idea. Why not have a little device that buzzes when you’re near something important? You can interact with it in some subtle way, and then later on you can open up your app or your tablet and you see, “Oh, I got this or did that.” That was one of the influences.”
Pokemon Go is scheduled to launch in 2016 for iOS and Android devices.
