Nintendo has officially lifted the review embargo for the Nintendo Switch.
In preparation for the console’s launch this Friday, several outlets posted their coverage of the Nintendo Switch hardware. Today, we take a look at what the industry thinks about the console and whether or not the Nintendo Switch will make a lasting impression.
CNET – “The Nintendo Switch is a solid piece of hardware that delivers an impressive gameplay experience in a small chassis. But a shallow roster of launch games beyond Zelda and a dearth of other features leaves the Switch feeling more like a blank slate of unfulfilled potential on day one.“
Wall Street Journal – “Elegant (but Unready) balance of Portable and Home Gaming.”
Engadget – “Nintendo has wowed us again, but it still has a long way to go to prove that the Switch isn’t another Wii U.”
Nintendo Life – “It remains to be seen if Nintendo’s most important hardware release yet will resonate with consumers; what we’ve seen so far, however, certainly fills us with confidence.”
Gamespot – “Should you make the Switch? That answer should largely depend on whether you think the system’s library of games will satisfy your needs, but Nintendo has undoubtedly laid the groundwork for a great gaming device.”
TechRadar – “In many ways it’s a big success, offering an exceptional level of handheld graphical quality, before seamlessly transitioning into a home console – but this very adaptability has necessitated compromises which mean it isn’t quite as good as the dedicated consoles and handhelds that have gone before it.”
Polygon – “The Switch is promising.”
Most of the reviews we read were singing the same tune. The Nintendo Switch is still missing a lot of its core features, including online functionality and the support for Micro SD cards. Nintendo is planning to release an update this Friday to resolve that issue, as well as some other miscellaneous fixes to known problems.
After the patch releases, it is possible some of these opinions will change, but from what we are seeing online; The Nintendo Switch is a huge hit.
The Nintendo Switch releases on March 3rd, 2017.
