I woke up this morning and booted up my Nintendo Switch, expecting to see three new previously announced NES games to appear in my library: Solomon’s Key, NES open Tournament Golf and Super Dodge Ball. I was shocked to discover that along with these three games, a second Legend Of Zelda game appeared labeled The Legend Of Zelda SP.
Upon investigation, I found that the “SP” version of NES classic Legend Of Zelda starts you off with lots of key items, money, bombs and keys. This makes the game much easier from the get-go and that theoretically, the full map is open to explore.
Nintendo have released this version of Zelda so that this tough but amazing retro gem is accessible to younger players. Obviously, the nostalgia factor in the NES service is only relative as far as the older generation of players are concerned and Nintendo needed a way to make their retro library a little more tailored to the younger players experiencing these games for the first time.
Nintendo does plan to develop “SP” versions of other NES classics, once again great news for younger players. It shows that Nintendo is ready to start giving us refreshed material for games that have been re-released on Virtual Consoles, over and over again.
