Sony’s State of Play presentation for September has ended, offering up previews into previously unheard-of projects. This along with more info on previously announced games and even a date for one of PlayStation’s more highly-anticipated releases. Whilst it couldn’t quite top the highs of the latest Nintendo Direct, Sony showed viewers that they have more than enough to offer up to PlayStation gamers.
First, lets get the big one out of the way. There is finally an official release date for The Last of Us Part II. The release date was revealed at the end of the newest trailer. So far, it doesn’t look like it should disappoint fans of the original; it looks just as grimy, intense and emotional as the previous instalment. You will be able to get your hands on it February 21, 2020. The trailer is below:
There was also a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare story trailer released, and they are most certainly trying to create a more realistic take on the veteran franchise. The story itself seems to be more of the same overblown set-pieces, but I can’t deny this is the first to catch my interest in years. If you happen to be one of the people who play Call of Duty for its single-player campaign, this should have you interested.
To fill out the trifecta of AAA games Sony also announced a Limited Edition Death Stranding PlayStation 4 Pro bundle, which consists of a white body and has two large black, dripping handprints as a design. It will be available on November 8, 2019 and will cost $499 CAD. You can check it out here.
Now for the rest of the announcements:
- Sony decided to name-drop the October PlayStation Plus free games early and the offerings are MLB The Show ’19 and The Last of Us Remastered.
- Also announced were two trippy and undeniably strange but compelling games– Humanity, (a game by Enhance and THA* LTD. and arriving in 2020) which was an exclusive reveal of a game that looks like it involves controlling crowds, though the ultimate goal of doing so is never shown, and Wattam (by Funomena and Annapurna Interactive), a cartoon game reminiscent of Katamari Damacy (of which it shares its creator, Keita Takahashi) and involves all kinds of things, from inanimate objects holding hands to a toilet flushing excrement down…itself? You can discover it for yourself in December of this year.
- The MediEvil demo released today on the PlayStation Store and should be available to download as of this writing.
- Civilization VI is debuting on the PlayStation 4, and while it won’t be adorned with the Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm DLC’s (that will cost an extra $50 US on top of the original $60) there will be some perks like extra civilizations (Poland, Austria, Persia and Macedonia) as well as The Vikings Scenario Pack. You can build your own civilization starting November 22, 2019.
- Arise– A Simple Story, a game from Techland Publishing and Piccolo looks to scratch the Journey itch by way of God of War. It’s cell-shaded look combined with the lonesome trek of the protagonist to a far mountain where it looks as if someone is frozen in stone should make for a memorable, though solitary, adventure.
- Ever wanted to try and out-drink the Devil? Well a new game looks to be allowing players to do just that– Afterparty, an upcoming title by Night School Studio looks to utilise a humorous personality mixed with some dark settings to set the tone for its binge-drinking teenage protagonists.
And finally, there were also several announcements for PlayStation VR:
- Rockstar announced the release (out now!) of L.A. Noire: VR Case Files, which looks to be very similar to the main game, only from a 1st-person perspective.
- A gladiatorial game that looks cel-shaded and has the player using various weapons in the center of an arena. It’s titled Gorn and will be available Winter 2019.
- Also available Winter 2019 is Stardust Odyssey, a sci-fi game where the player pilots what appears to be a ship while blasting aerial (space?) enemies.
- Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News Flash! is releasing in Autumn 2019, and to be honest, I have no idea what it is…but it looks like dancing.
- Espire 1: VR Operative attempts to create an immersive stealth/action game (September 2019).
- After the Fall, a post-apocalyptic shooter involving monsters is set to release sometime in 2020.
And that’s all! Is there anything you are particularly excited for? Were you disappointed in what they did show? Let us know in the comments below.
