In a rather mind-blowing twist, Nintendo is bringing their flagship mascot character to the iPhone of all things.
Announced at today’s Apple conference, Super Mario Run is more or less what the title implies: an endless runner. A fairly standard formula for mobile games, endless runners have the character automatically run across a sidescrolling level, jumping with a tap of your finger and relying on timing to dodge obstacles. In this regard, Super Mario Run looks par for the course, albeit with a New Super Mario Bros. coat of paint.
What sets Super Mario Run apart from the rest appears to be a simultaneous online multiplayer mode, with characters belonging to both players showing up onscreen at once.
Super Mario Run does not currently have a release date for iOS beyond a vague “before the holidays” and it is unknown if it will ever come to Android devices.
