Hello everyone, and welcome to Entry Level Games. If you’re a first-time reader here, then welcome. We’re a geek culture site that covers gaming news, VTubers and more.
Another thing we like to do is Q&As with folks all across the gaming industry, from CEOs to Voice Actors. We’ve also done Q&As with VTubers before too. In this Q&A, we’ll be talking to a Vtuber named Rayshii, who recently celebrated their 3-year anniversary. They are a part of the Veisou Vtuber Group.
We had the opportunity to ask Rayshii a few questions, along with having a general chat and getting to know them better. Please enjoy the questions and answers below.
Questions and Answers
Question: What made you get into Vtubing?
“It’s actually a funny story… I never meant to get into Vtubing. Back in mid-late 2020, I was just streaming and doing my own thing. I happened to browse steam and find VROID Studio and found that you could create your own character, so I installed it and played around.
I thought to myself that maybe there was a way to use my character from this on stream instead of using a facecam — I never liked them and never used one. So, I found a program on steam that let me and started to stream with it later that day. I had someone come into my stream and ask if I was a vtuber, to which I replied I was unaware of what that was… and now we’re here!“
Question: How did you create your look and brand?
“My initial design was entirely different. Coming into the vtubing sphere lead me to using a dragon OC of mine as my vtuber model for around a year.
As my understanding grew of the vtubing community, I wanted something that was more personal and something that was ‘me’. I took features from my actual self, such as my eye colour and freckles, as well as using things I liked such as purple hair and cats. That’s really what got me to my overall design.
As for my brand — I’ve always tried to make a comfy and inclusive space, so I did not want something right in your face. I wanted something I could develop lore of, because I love writing and creating stories.
This led me to making my brand initially based on an adventurer who ends up in a new world where she establishes her guild. Eventually, as I got my 3.0 model, I expanded the lore to what it is now — becoming the Guardian of the Umbral Forest, an alternative forest of where my guild was.”
Question: What is one activity you’d like to do on stream that you haven’t done yet?
“I want to host some sort of competition and commentate it, probably Mario Kart or something similar! I love getting others involved, especially my own community who love to join me when we play Mario Kart on stream.
I think it would be fun seeing different people – community members, vtubers, streamers, etc, all battle it out. I want to provided a prize too, so if I do it, I would need to think of something.”
Question: What inspires you in the Vtuber community?
“My friends and my community! Since I was a streamer and content creator years before becoming a vtuber, I have always felt outcast a little as I don’t tend to stick to vtuber trends and other things. But, the friends and my community I have built along the way have always been there to support me and uplift me.
Seeing my friends achieve things in this community inspires me to continue pushing and doing what I want to do.”
Question: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a Vtuber so far?
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced is probably adjusting to being a vtuber. Being a vtuber is not as easy as it seems. You cannot just be a pretty face on screen, you’ve got to create content — building a following, managing social media, and finding ways to monetize content. There is also the financial burden to consider as starting out, you may not have the resources or experience of more established creators.”
Question: What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had so far as a Vtuber?
“I would have to say my most recent donothon in march to celebrate my 5-year streaming anniversary and return to streaming. Originally it was only meant to last 2 days max and we ended up finishing on day 14.
It was so much fun spending time with my friends and community and we smashed through all our stretch goals too. I adore my community, they are the best. I feel like it really brought together our little community more.”
Question: What is your Vtuber career goal?
“My career goal honestly is to do my best to make people happy! Whilst being a full time content creator would be great, as long as I can make people happy, that is what matters the most to me. I would also like to one day release an original song!”
Question: What advice would you give to those wanting to become a Vtuber?
“Do your research! It is important to understand what you want to do and what you’re getting into. In my opinion, it is much more important to know what type of content creator you want to be before having a fancy model or big debut.
I would consider what type of model you want too (3D, 2D, PNG, etc) as they all cost different amounts and need different things to work. I would also say that if you want to do this as a hobby, part-time or full-time is important as I believe it helps you put out your best work.
Start on small goals and work your way up — avoid burning out from the get-go and work on your craft. It may take weeks, months, or even years, but I promise you, working on yourself will help you improve your content in the future.”
